Some people call it different.

We call it authentic.
For generations, masculine-presenting lesbians, studs, butches, and gender-nonconforming women have lived in a world that often tried to define them before they had the chance to define themselves. Too often, they have been reduced to stereotypes, misunderstood, or judged simply because they refused to conform to someone else's expectations of what a woman should look like.

For many, especially during the 1980s and beyond, presenting in masculine clothing could invite harassment, violence, or worse. Yet countless women continued to live honestly, choosing authenticity over fear even when doing so carried real risk.

Built Different is a tribute to that courage.

It celebrates the diversity within the lesbian community and honors every masculine-presenting woman whose identity cannot be confined to a label or stereotype. Some wear men's clothing. Some don't. Some identify as studs, butches, masc, or simply as women who feel most themselves outside traditional ideas of femininity. Every story is different. Every journey deserves respect.

This artwork reminds us that strength has many faces, identity belongs to the individual, and being different has never been something to hide. It is something to honor.
